Rio Grande Art Association Program for September 19, 2009 Title: STUFF ABOUT COLOR & YOU Presenter/ Demonstrator: JEANNE WEITZ Content: EXPLORING YOUR OBJECTIVE & SUBJECTIVE FEELINGS ABOUT COLOR Color is the most exciting and flexible element of Art. Our eyes see it, our brains frantically search in our memory banks to see if any of the specific properties of that color - hue, value, intensity, or temperature – have influenced you positively or negatively in the past to tell the rest of your body how to react to this experience. While your eyes perceive a color and the person standing right beside you surely sees the same color, you and your neighbor’s personal experiences may be completely different. You see the rosy clouds at sunup with pleasure and get busy painting. Your neighbor recalls the old sea chant, “ Red sky at twilight, sailors delight. Red sky at dawning, sailors takes warning”, and he hurries down to the dock. Responses to the same color are seldom identical on a personal level. Ever since prehistorical time, humans have been able to survive as a species by our ability to respond to our senses, - seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting, and touching. Sight is the most important. Unfortunately there has to be light enough to see. Therefore SIGHT and LIGHT are bound together. Light was not explored scientifically until about 400 or so years ago when factual information about color was revealed. Prior to that time, spiritual forces and deities controlled color so it was thought that color possessed magical aspects. Many of our feelings about color are still tinted by the past and influence our responses to various hues. We retain those feelings in our vocabularies. Is this a RED LETTER DAY FOR YOU? FEELING BLUE? Well, What is your COLOR PERSONALITY. Come to the meeting to learn a bit more about COLOR STUFF. |
